Pars Fracture (Spondylolysis)

Pars fracture (or spondylolysis) is a stress fracture through the pars interarticularis, a segment of the vertebra which connects the facet joints of the spine. Located on either side of the vertebra, a stress fracture can happen on one side (unilateral) or both sides (bilateral). The most common area of the spine it affects is the lumbar (lower) spine, specifically L5. If a pars fracture is not properly diagnosed and treated, it can worsen and lead to more serious conditions like spondylolisthesis, where a vertebra slips out of place.

Common symptoms of pars fracture

It’s important to watch for signs such as: lower back pain (either on one side or both) pain that worsens with activity pain in the back, legs, or thighs a “pins and needles” sensation in the leg, sometimes with numbness or weakness   Bespoke Pars fracture spinal brace

Causes

These stress fractures usually occur during childhood or adolescence and are common in young athletes. It is most often caused by repetitive load and stress, rather than an acute event. We have identified a particular group of athletes who are most at risk from this injury: young fast-bowling cricketers.

Early diagnosis and bracing can make all the difference

Early diagnosis and prompt bracing can significantly shorten recovery time from the normal six months to as little as three months. What's more, none of our braced patients have required surgery—a testament to the benefits of early intervention.

Why are young fast bowlers at risk?

Fast bowlers, particularly bowlers aged between 14-17 years old, are most vulnerable to this injury because their skeletons are still growing. Their bones haven’t fully matured, making them less able to handle the repeated stress that fast bowling places on the lower back.

The unique fast bowling action, which combines a long run-up and powerful delivery motion, puts extreme strain on the lumbar spine. And it is, of course, a repetitive action.

Treatment

Treatment for pars fractures usually involves rest and bracing to stabilise the spine.
