Victor Robot joins LOC Manufacturing Team

LOC Manufacturing welcomes a new team member - Victor the robot!

above: Sam Walmsley checking Victor's first carvings Manufactured by Rodin4D, Victor is a seven-axis CNC (Computer Numerical Control) milling machine that can precisely create orthotic and prosthetic moulds in any direction and across any plane. This means that for the first time, we can design, model and manufacture trickier and unusual ergonomic orthotic body shapes on-site at our clinic in Kingston-upon-Thames. LOC is only the second location in the UK to have a robot with Victor’s capabilities. What makes Victor different? Traditional milling machines work on fewer axes, making it virtually impossible to mill certain shapes. Milling neck collars under the chin, for example, is particularly tricky, and the foot has a right angle, which is very difficult to mill. Victor’s arrival gives us the capacity to mill increasingly advanced and complex shapes. LOC Manufacturing staff member, Ruban, using the Rodin4D technology In the past 12 months, we have been learning how to get the best out of Victor and at the same time the LOC Manufacturing team has refined and developed its modelling skills. This has meant that during the ongoing pandemic, we have been able to model and mill braces that are urgently required by a number of NHS hospitals and third-party orthotic clinics. With Victor able and willing to work 24 hours a day from receipt of an STL/OBJ file (without a tea break), we have the capacity to deliver a precisely worked mould within 12-24 hours.

Improved Lead Times & Accuracy

To give just one example, one of our clinical clients, Prestige Healthcare, specialises in delivering myeloma spinal braces within a 48-hour turnaround to the NHS. Victor the Robot produces milled torsos in extremely complex spinal shapes, enabling Prestige to manufacture Thoracic Lumbar Sacral Orthoses (TLSOs) and Cervical Thoracic Lumbar Sacral Orthoses (CTLSOs) for the treatment of Myeloma within very tight timescales. Victor is available now for milling contracts and commissions. Please get in touch to find out more.
