LOC opens OSKAR Clinic
BY Daisy
24 January 2019
The London Orthotic Consultancy is pleased to announce that it is opening a monthly clinic in the Gait Laboratory at the teaching hospital at the
University of Salford which is located a mile outside Manchester City Centre.
The
Optimal Segmental Kinematics Alignment approach to Rehabilitation (OSKAR) is an orthotic method of treating children with lower limb neuromuscular conditions caused by such conditions as
cerebral palsy and
spina bifida. It was originally developed by
Elaine Owen MBE MSc SRP MCSP, a world-renowned physiotherapist who was awarded an MBE in 2012 for services to children with disabilities.

Impairments from cerebral palsy range in severity, usually in correlation to the degree of injury to the brain. The primary effects of cerebral palsy are impairments of muscle tone, motor functions, balance and posture. Exact symptoms will vary from child to child.
LOC assesses each child on the basis of the International Classification of Functioning Disability and Health which was approved for use by the World Health Assembly in 2001 and provides an objective framework for our clinicians. Gait and walking patterns will be assessed in the university’s gait laboratory. Then goals can be set for the improvements desired from the range of
bespoke orthotic treatments we can prescribe.
Sam Walmsley, LOC’s clinical director commented on the opening: "We are delighted to be able to offer this clinical treatment package in a location that will be more convenient for many patients who live in the north. Having worked with Elaine for a number of years we know what a difference we can make to children’s lives in maximising their potential."
